OVERVIEW

Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies. Located in the Caribbean region of the Americas, this is a glorious part of the world renowned for its incredible weather, friendly locals and relaxed environment.

Barbados is called The Little Britain of the Caribbean because of its longstanding history as a British colony. It is a treasure trove of architectural and historical treasures, while its National Trust is committed to conserving and restoring them throughout the island. The official language spoken here is English, therefore settling in should be relatively straightforward.

Why choose Barbados?

The gorgeous island of Barbados is a tempting choice for expats looking for employment and a new way of life. It has a stable economy, modern healthcare system and a high standard of living.

Because of the island's popularity as a tourist destination, this makes competition for jobs extremely fierce. Still, many jobs are available here, including within the international business and financial services sectors.

Requirements to set up a company

In order to establish a New Business (RBC or SRL) you will need to submit a number of organization documents. Requirements to establish an international business include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • An official Barbados address where minutes books, share registers, and other information required by law will be stored

  • A minimum and maximum number of directors (a company may have as little as one director)

  • Certificate of Incorporation

  • Full name and residential address of each director

  • Registration/incorporation numbers of each shareholder of the company

  • Number of employees of the firm that will need work permits and the positions that each of them will hold

Requirements for employees wishing to relocate

To work in Barbados, you'll require authorization to work. Most jobs are reserved for native Barbadians if there aren't any applicants with the required skillset to be considered. Getting permits before arrival on the island is recommended due to the length of time required to get them granted. The typical wait time for a work permit ranges from between six and eight weeks.

To obtain a Barbados work permit you will need a completed application from your employer.

To obtain a temporary work permit for up to 11 months, you will be required to submit all necessary documentation. This includes:

  • A comprehensive cover letter from your prospective employer outlining the purpose of the company as well as the duration that you will be employed for, the type of employment, and the reasons for the request

  • A C1, C2 or C-3 work permit application form

  • Certificate of Character issued by the police in each country in which you've resided for at least six months within the last 3 years (if you're from the UK, it will be a DBS check within the past three months)

  • A duplicate of the bio-data section of your passport

  • A medical form including X-rays
