Despite increased competition in the telecoms market, Jersey Telecom (JT) has reported record sales figures for August almost doubling its average monthly sales and exceeding by 43% Christmas figures when traditionally sales reach their peak.

JT has experienced increased sales of mobile phone handsets since launching Super Mobile data speeds of 7.2 Meg earlier this year as customers seek to take advantage of smoother and quicker internet on their mobile devices.

The August sales figures demonstrate the current demand in the Island for mobile data, which has increased fourfold in the past 12 months and with over 100,000 pre and post paid SIMs in Jersey this trend in purchasing new devices to enable the latest applications is expected to continue.

Tim Ringsdore, managing director of the CI Division at Jersey Telecom, said: “Since we launched faster mobile broadband speeds many of our customers have sought the advice of our experienced sales team to upgrade to the latest handsets and have also taken advantage of the regular handset promotions that we run. New devices such as the iPhone 4 enable our customers to get the most out of our improved speeds to access their emails and Facebook, download music and browse websites such as the BBC or YouTube from any location and at anytime.”

He added: “Facebook claims that over a third of its active users access Facebook through their mobile device and our own research in Jersey supports statistics which point towards continued increases in consumers using mobile data. As speeds increase further we expect more customers to gain confidence in using mobile internet and add data bundles to their contracts.”

Any unwanted mobile phones are collected by Jersey Telecom in its Queen Street shop and sent for recycling to The British Red Cross.
