Temping is increasingly becoming the preferred solution for people in all different situations, whether it be whilst they are seeking permanent employment, school leavers/graduates considering their options and gaining some work experience before making a commitment, or semi-retired individuals who are still keen to have some sort of working life but for fewer hours. It is ultimately a very productive way of learning new skills.
The pace for temping can often be fast moving and challenging, and more frequently employers are seeking individuals who are able to use their own initiative and who are ’on the ball’.
Confidence plays a big part in gaining a temporary or contract position and, whereas in the past employers have been happy to take on a candidate without going through the interview process, in the last 18 months we have seen an increase in the number of employers requesting an interview with the candidate before committing to taking them on, therefore the more confidence you have in your abilities the better. We would advise all candidates attending interviews to research the company; this will impress the client and demonstrate your interest in the role.
Legal Requirement To Temp In Jersey
If you have arrived in Jersey and wish to temp there are certain rules and regulations of which you should be aware. We would need to see your passport and working visa (if you are outside of the EU) and you would need to get a letter from Immigration giving you permission to work. You would also have to register with Social Security and they will give you a Social Security card which we would hold while you were temping for us. Everyone working on the Island is liable to pay social security contributions at a rate of 6%.
In Jersey, under the Regulations of Undertakings and Development Department, an employer would have to use a special licence to employ a non-local. You are classified as local if you have resided on the Island for five years or more. A non-local is able to temp for a period of ten working days without this licence being required. Some of our clients are able to employ non-locals but others cannot so this does put some limitations on anyone who is just visiting the Island.
When you register with us for temporary work we would call you with details of any assignments that we deemed suitable for you. It would be up to you if you wanted to accept the assignment or not. We would give you as much information as possible; the name of the company, the nature of the job, working hours, whom to report to, rate of pay and most importantly, directions – it’s not good to get lost on the first day!
Depending on the length of the assignment, some clients would want to interview you before agreeing to offer you the position.
Once you agree to accept the assignment you would be required to complete our terms and conditions. You will, at this stage, need to supply us with your bank details and social security card. Payment is made directly into your bank account on a weekly basis every Friday on submission of your time sheet. The terms and conditions will be gone through with you and any questions that you have will be answered.
